Wales preparations for next month's Test matches against Australia, South Africa and Fiji have suffered a blow after full-back Lee Byrne was ruled out through injury, officials said Monday.

British and Irish Lions star Byrne suffered a fractured bone in his right hand during Ospreys Celtic League match against Glasgow on Sunday.

The Welsh Rugby Union said in an injury bulleting Byrne had only an "outside chance" of recovering in time for the final match of Wales' autumn series, against New Zealand in Cardiff on November 27. Meanwhile, Scarlets loose forward Rob McCusker has withdrawn from the squad to undergo a hernia operation.

Cardiff Blues wing Leigh Halfpenny - a possible alternative to Byrne - was also sweating on the outcome of a scan on an ankle problem.

Monye underwent a toe operation last month that will rule him out of England’s autumn internationals against New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Samoa.

He was given a 12-week timeframe to return, meaning he would be back in mid-December, but he is confident he can be playing before then.

"It’s frustrating. I’m a terrible spectator when I’m not on the pitch," the 27-year-old said. "The toe’s not too bad. I was supposed to be playing in December but hopefully I can push the boundaries and be quicker than that.
